More Fall Hill Country Harvest Tour Fun!! 🤠🌾 #ahthgc

For our next stop on the Fall Hill Country Harvest Tour today, we journeyed down the country road to the Morris School House in Fredericksburg. The 1893 schoolhouse, owned by Francie Mannix and Marcie Symington, is built of native limestone. Guests can reserve overnight stays, host events and experience ranch products, including their award-winning wine, High Gun.

A delicious lunch was served by Don Strange under the trees. Along with raffle prizes, there was a silent auction supporting the TREES Initiative + shopping at a farmers market. And the weather was perfect-- cool and crisp!!

We kicked off the fabulous Fall Hill Country Harvest tour today at the Prairie Mountain Ranch, owned by Brandi and Scott Hollingshead. Welcomed with coffee and muffins, we toured the majestic two-story homestead that featured 20 inch thick walls and porches on both floors overlooking Prairie Mountain. It was built from local materials in 1875-1888.

This year's tour takes us to the Prairie Mountain Ranch in Llano, owned by Brandi and Scott Hollingshead, for a home and grounds tour at 10 AM. Next, we journey to the Morris School House in Fredericksburg, owned by Francie Mannix and Marcie Symington, for a home tour from 11:30-1:30, including a Don Strange catered lunch at 11:45 AM.

Along with raffle prizes, there will be a silent auction supporting the Hill Country Flood Relief Effort. FHT invitations include driving directions. Please request one if you have not received it.

Tickets to the event are $100 per person. Raffle tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. Payment: Check payable to AHTHGC mailed to Terry Gouger, 110 Kennedy #8, San Antonio, Texas 78209 or Credit Card (via the club website) or Venmo at @ahthgc-1 (please double check the Venmo account).

Many members have not yet purchased their event ticket and raffle tickets. All Active members must pay the price of an event ticket even if you cannot attend. The winner of the 2025 Montine McDaniel Freeman Medal was announced at the Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference in September. Thanks to the efforts of Club Horticulture Chair, Mary Zocchi, our club received Honorable Mention for her submission of the Lillium surperbum, Turk's cap lily. This is a huge accomplishment that has taken Mary many years of effort. It's a big win for Mary and our club!

"A second Honorable Mention was awarded to Lilium superbum, commonly known as the Turk's-cap lily or American swamp lily. Lilium superbum attracts hummingbirds and is pollinated by the eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), one of the largest butterflies in New England. Spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus), pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor), and great spangled fritillaries (Speyeria cybele) are also frequent visitors. The lily's abundant nectar makes it a valuable food source for various insects and wildlife."

Conserving Texas: Heart of Texas Conservancy

Our speaker for the October meeting is Ben Eldridge, Executive Director of the Heart of Texas Conservancy. Their mission is to preserve and protect the natural heritage of the Texas landscape for current and future generations. Through conservation easements and advocacy the land trust has conserved thousands of acres throughout the Texas Hill Country, including promoting county bonds for parks, while supporting regional resilience strategies and promoting sensible natural resource protections.

The Heart of Texas Conservancy has been helping Hill Country landowners design their own legacies for over 27 years. The Conservancy currently holds 37 easements on over 20 square miles of private land, totaling 14,443 acres in Kendall, Bandera, Comal, Real, Uvalde, Hays, and Gillespie counties ensuring that the scenic vistas, natural resources, and wildlife that define Texas are honored and held in trust for generations to come.

Please come and learn about this effort to preserve Texas lands and wildlife! 🌾

Bring any gardening books you no longer want to the meeting to share with other members. Julie Allen, our hostess, will graciously provide a table on the front porch for the books. You can browse the selection before and after the meeting. Take as many as you want! Any leftover books will be donated to a library, unless someone has a better idea. Our new year is off to a great start with about 60 members attending the first meeting today in the beautiful Monte Vista home of Mary Rentschler! We all were amazed at Mary's bonsai tree that is 100+ years old!

We enjoyed the informative presentation on the medicinal powers of food and herbal wellness by Elizabeth Johnson, Chef at @pharmtable, who believes food can heal us! Pharm Table provided some healthy goodies for us to sample.

Plans for the year were discussed. Mark October 30 on your calendars for our annual fun fundraiser, Fall Harvest Tour, which will take place in the Fredericksburg area this year. 💚#ahthgc

Alamo Heights-Terrell Hills Garden Club presented a $10,000 grant to Boysville, Inc. partnering with @gardopiagardens to establish an active garden for the youth of Boysville.
